Seneca Sting Advance at the George Brown Tournament

Saturday January 8, 2011

The Seneca Sting Mens basketball team advanced with an opening win over the Champlain Caviliers at the George Brown tournament Friday night with 69-60 win. The Sting showed the holiday rust and started out slow and seemed a bit nervous allowing the Caviliers easy lay-ups and open jump shots resulting in a 6 point lead. Lead by SF Vadim Halimov (20pts) and PG Dean DeJesus (16pts) the Sting overcame a slow start to take a 1 point lead into the half.

The second half both teams battled hard and traded baskets but it was the defence of the Sting that helped them pull away. Lead through the defence of returning forward Curtis Baanee and veterans Jermaine Lighbody and Norm Hamilton the Sting began to pull away opening up a 12 point lead with two minutes left in the game. The Sting held off a late push from the Caviliers who never gave up.

The Caviliers were lead by David Belanger (15pts) who shot perfect from the field and Youssef Ouahrig (13pts). Ouahrig played some great defence and put continuous ball pressure on the Sting's ball handlers resulting in 3 steals.

The Caviliers will face Durham College at 11:30am Saturday in the consolation bracket and the Sting will face Fanshaw College at 3:30pm in the championship bracket. Good luck to both teams.
