This week we had some good workouts with the guys .. we only practiced Monday and Tuesday but it went well and the coaching staff was making a practice shift to help build the players to become better individual and team players ...
Looking at the guys we had at the practices we were looking to good going into the second half of he basketball season ... some good players and key role players were coming in and adding them to the existing core would only strengthen our team come January.
Then last night an email comes across my phone from the administration at the school. Our players have finished their first semester exams and they are providing us their eligibility for the upcoming semester ... As I was reading the names of who can not play for the Sting this semester I couldn't believe who was not going to be playing. It came as a great shock and great disappointment when I read several names on the list ... I know these guys and know that they can hold the grades and handle the classes and workload that they had. More in the fact that they didn't feel comfortable enough to come to me and let me know that they were having problems in their classes and needed some guidance.
I will still continue to check up on these guys to make sure that they are doing well in their classes and that if they do need any guidance I am there to help. I want them to graduate from college with a diploma not finish school because their basketball careers have come to an end. I want them to succeed and I will try my best to help them find that path.
Back to the team, this means we will be shorthanded the rest of the semester and may have to open up a second semester tryout to see if we can find some diamonds in the rough ... but with the guys that are left I do think that if they put forth a strong effort and show commitment for the rest of the season we will make the playoffs and hopefully do well in the OCAA tournament.
Time will tell ...
