That it has ... over the last week while the kids where studying and writing exams I have had the opportunity to relax and step away from the high school basketball scene ... every so often you need to to get a better picture of the whole and to re-focus yourself as a coach ... That is exactly what I did ...
i continued my college coaching duties but for that week and a bit I was able to get a bit more sleep and really look at the season that Don Bosco is having ... This year has been a tough year for the school especially after making a great run to make it to Ofsaa last year ... This year we are young and have a bunch of transfers ... the transfers took way to long to get approved and a couple of the guys were ineligible for the season ... That has made it tough as our roster was forever changing ... now that the team is finally set we shall see what happens ...
This year has also been particularly hard with practices ... because I am a volunteer coach I schedule my practices in the AM so I can still make work on time so after school practices are unfortunately out of the question ... This year the attendance at practices have been very poor so myself and the other coaches are constantly teaching the same things over and over so everyone knows what is going on ... this has led us to not having many plays and a lot of the guys not even knowing what the plays are when they are on the floor ...
We currently have a winning record and should make the tier 1 playoffs but we will have to really gel and work hard to make that Ofsaa push like last year ... not saying it can't be done but it will be a hard battle I hope all the guys are ready for ...
So today we started back up with the morning practices and myself along with my assistant coach were ready to get started ... i walked into the gym at 6:50am 10 minutes before practice started and only 4 guys were there ready to go ... then at 7am 2 more showed up ... so a total of half our team showed up for morning practice even after 2 announcements were made reminding them of the practice the day before ... another 2 showed up later in practice one 25 minutes late and the other was 45 minutes late ... not the way that I wanted to start ...
But trying to think more positively an encourage the guys who are showing the commitment ... the guys who are not coming to practice or are late will now sit on the bench for the amount of time they miss during practice ... miss a practice .. miss a game kinda thinking ... lets see how that works ...
So for today's practice we wanted to get the rust off of the guys and really work on some stuff that they can use in the game ... we completed a quick warm-up drill of 6 man passing completing both left and right hand ... then moved onto 3 man weave with elbow jumpers ... the guys were having a bit of a listening and concentration issues so we completed a set of 17s to get the blood flowing followed by foul shots ... after a quick water break we went into some shooting drills ... we started with elbow jumpers with a pump fake and continued through a series of drills which included driving and hitting the man in the drift spots ...
We ended practice today like we usually do with some foul shots and conditioning ... I like to make sure that the guys heart rates up when they shoot because 90% of the time when they are in the game they get fouled and their heart rate is high and they have to concentrate on the shot ... game time simulation ...
We go back at it tomorrow and will focus on our offense ... going to go over the ones we have in place as well as teach them a couple of new easy sets to help make the ball move ...
