FHC vs Don Bosco - January 6, 2010

Happy New Year Everyone!!

I hope that everyone enjoyed their holiday season and are ready for a new decade full of fun and excitement!

So our first game back after the holidays was against the 4th best team in the GTA ... Father Henry Carr ... just like every year they are strong, tall, fast and talented! and well coached ... A very good team that plays TEAM basketball. Yeah they tend to become more one on one and show off a bit more once they have a big big lead against teams that are less talented than them but for the most part play good team ball.

Ok onto the game ...

Carr came out right off the bat and tried to crush our spirits right from the tip off. The game was going back and fourth but Carr was hitting their shots and we were not resulting in Carr opening up a 13 - 0 point lead before I called a timeout. I tried to settle the guys down a bit and remind them that they want us to play reckless and its our responsibility to calm down and bring the ball up at a nice pace ... which we started doing :) Shortly after the time out we were down on the offense end and one of my players took a vicious elbow to the face while trying to establish post position ... no call ... we had to sub the player out for the rest of the half as we were unable to stop the bleeding ...

Second quarter Carr continued to press us and slowly built up a bigger lead ... Bosco continued to run their offense and began to see the seems of the defense penetrate through causing bad rotation on Carrs part and resulting in easy baskets for us ... We went into the half down 18 points ...

As I walked into the lockerroom at half a couple of the guys had their heads down and a couple of the guys were trying to pick up everyone spirits ... I walked to the middle of the room and simply said "Guys we are only down 18 to the 4th best team in the GTA! ... We are still in this game! all we have to do is relax and take our time and we will be fine" we then talked a bit about what each player is suppose to do and we got everyone excited to play again!

The 3rd quarter started much like the first Carr started it out with another run of about 8 points opening up their lead ... so I had to make a couple quick subs to get some energy on the courts and talk to a couple of the guys and get them back into the game ... it seemed to work as we started again to calm down and run our offense. We began scoring and cutting the 20+ point lead down ...

The 4th Quarter started out with both teams trading baskets and my players still playing relaxed basketball ... sure Carr may have been up by 20 or so points but my guys were playing hard and executing on both the defensive end and the offensive end ... and most of all we were not giving up! As I was saying to them after the game that night ... we may have lost on the scoreboard but we won a bunch of the battles and that I was very proud and happy with them for that ...

During the 4th quarter I also received my very first technical foul in my 10 years of coaching ... I am sure I will receive more over my coaching career but this one just plain bothers me as I was protecting my players due to a game of poor officiating by one of the officials ... that is all I am going to say on the matter as I can not change the outcome of the game and the people that needed to know already know my thoughts ...

I wish the best for Henry Carr for the 2010 season and I hope they win 4A and represent TCDAA at 4A Ofsaa.

Our next game is Monday against Dante @ Dante ... see you then ...
