Sorry for the long delay between posts as I have had a lot of things on the go thus far ... applying to college again so been writing essays and getting things for that organized ...
As well both my teams are in full swing so my mind hasn't been really on the "let's write a blog" mentality ... I will however try to post a blog for each of the games now rather then trying the practice and games blogs ... unfortunately I just don't have the time right now ... but who knows maybe I will get some extra time and start that up again ...
So the Seneca Sting are now 5-3 on the regular season ... not a bad start but not a great start ... we should be 7-1 but sometimes teams just don't want to show up until its to late ... Over the last couple of weeks we have had some tough games ... we played Flemming a couple of weeks ago and fell just short of beating them ... mind you the guys didn't start to play until 10 minutes left and down 10 ... they have two players on their team that can ONLY dribble with their right hand ... in fact it is so bad that they will use one dribble with their left and then go back right ... funny that no matter what we said they let him go right until the 2nd half ... he dropped like 20+ in the first half and less then 10 in the second ... it's amazing when they listen and run a game plan ... we start to beat up on teams ... unfortunately for us it was just a bit late ...
Our next game was against Algonquin ... they are a tough team and we had to go to their house to play ... this is a top tier team and one that we needed to beat if we wanted to move up in the rankings and show that Seneca is on the move. This was a game were both teams came out sloppy and not playing well ... we were giving open 3s and they were giving us lay ups after lay ups ... The second half showed a veteran team come ouut with a quick start jumping to a 12 point lead ... we were forced to call a quick timeout and get the guys organized ... we came back out playing a bit harder but still not chipping into their lead ... at about the 10 minute mark we got their lead down to 10 ... applying pressure Algonquin began to turn the ball over more frequently and we began to chip away at their lead ... with about 5 minutes left we took the lead and never looked back ... This is the first win over Algonquin since the new coaching staff took over ... it was a hard fought win but should have been played for 40 minutes rather then 15.
Our next game was against Le Cite ... everyone played and we won by 30+ ... they are not a strong team but we had the opportunity to get some guys in the game that normally don't play and see what they can bring to the table ... good confidence booster for those guys ... overall it was a sloppy game one that we should have won by a lot more ...
Last Friday we hosted Durham College another team in the middle of the pack gunning for that playoff spot ... we ost the game by roughly 10 or so ... not a very good game at all ... we had plenty of chances to win the game but the guys just didn't want to play ... granted us coaches can take some of the blame we had a relatively easy Thursday practice and that could have set the tone and we should have gone into a zone earlier in the game as they couldn't figure out how to solve it ... but the guys did not box out, rebound well or deny middle which are key to winning any game ... Monday's practice wonder what we did?? lol
Tonight we play Loyalist ... i missed those games last year but should be a W on our end if our guys come to play ...
Don Bosco!
So we started the season last Thursday with a tight win over Bishop Allen ... I say tight because we won by 2 points! We had a 10 point lead and watched it slip away as the guys made way to many turnovers and ran things outside of our offense ... I was also missing 6 guys that would play regular minutes so I was relying heavily on my bench players to play lots of minutes ... glad that it worked out in our favour ... This years team seems to have a better chemistry early in the season then last year so hopefully that will continue to grown as we work towards another Ofsaa birth ...
We host Micheal Power today ... this will be a very tough game as they are one of the top teams and did not lose any of their top players ... at least I get back a couple of my regular players ... but one wont be playing until later in the game after he sits for his actions at school last week ...
Until next time ....
Coach Hopps
