So today we had our second day of tryouts ... the kids showed up for the 7AM practice ready to go and listening ... but to start it off I walked into the gym at 6:50AM to the gym being divided in half with a wall partition ... graet lucky me ... so while traveling the school looking for the custodian I bump into the new principal ... he was starting at me and I wasn't sure who he was so I introduced myself and he was like "I'm The principal" with this face like I was to know who he was ... I just smiled and said my name shook his hand and asked if he could page the custodian for me so we could get the tryouts going ... needless to say he paged and we were able to get the tryout going ... He seems like a nice man and I am sure we will get along well once we get to know each other ...
Ok the tryout ... decided to go a different route then the day before ... change it up and bit and see what everyone fundamentals are like ... today we broke them up into 6 groups ... and placed them around the gym at different stations that I had thought of and set up ...
Station 1
This was the defensive shuffle drill ... I had set up pilon markers for distance that he players had to work on their defensive shuffle ... they had to stay in the defensive crouch, hands high, point their direction foot and push hard for 30 seconds ... they had a ten second rest and started again ... this went on for 3 sets ...
Station 2
This was a shooting drill in pairs ... one player would shoot a 15 foot jump shot and get his rebound, while he was retrieving his rebound his partner would run to another spot on the floor to receive a pass and shoot a 15 foot jump shot. If there were multiple groups on the basket it would be a competition to see which group could hit 10 jumpers before the other ... winner only had to do 10 sit-ups, loser had to do 20 push-ups ...
Station 3
Passing station, in pairs they would complete 50 chest passes switching feet on every pass (this allows them to be able to pass from either foot) once they complete 50 chest passes they had to drop for 20 push-ups, then complete 50 bounce passes, then down for 20 sit-ups ...
Station 4
was a pivot station ... this is a great drill for them as they learn to take short choppy pivots and maintain balance as they may get bumped as they pivot. the player would self toss the ball 10 feet from the basket. catch the ball on a two foot jump stop with back facing the basket ... using short forward pivots they would pivot to the right position for a shot ... they would complete 5 with using their left leg as a pivot and then complete 5 using their right as the pivot ...
After everyone had completed each station we had them get some water ....
once back from the water break I had them line up on the sideline to complete 17s in under a minute ... they completed them in 1 minute 36 seconds ... not bad for day two ...
we then started working them on their core ... we did forward facing planks held for 30 seconds, 6 inch leg lifts for 30 seconds, right and left side planks for 30 seconds and finished off with 10 supermans holding for a 3 count at the top ...
We end every practice with free throws so that is exactly what we did ... 1 n 1's hit the first was 10 sit-ups, miss the first 1 up down 10 burpees ... we completed a couple of those and then asked one kid to come up, double or nothing ... he missed!
We brought them to the middle and talked about the tryout and informed them that the next one will be tuesday morning. I suggested that over the weekend they go for a run and work on their core at home doing push ups and sit ups as a lot and I mean a lot of them can not do one push-up on their knees where we would usually have them on their toes ... lots of work they have to do if they want to make the team ...
Overall I liked the hustle the kids came today with ... a couple slackers but they wont be here long if they continue that ... going to be hard to pick a team this year a lot of hard workers that are showing me that they want to play on this team ... the returning players have their work cut out for them ...
No a couple have to fill out transfer papers so we will see where that goes first ...
Next tryout Tuesday October 6, 2009 7:00AM
Cuts will be made after Thursday's tryout!
