Hope everyone had a great Thanksgiving sorry for missing a week of practices and the tournament updates ... I am working on the writing for the tournaments and unfortunately you won't get to hear about the practices as I was ill last week ...
So tonight's practice was a good practice ... we have a game tomorrow so we didn't want to work them out to hard as we want to make sure they are all ready for the exhibition game against Fanshawe in London.
So my night with the guys started around 5:30pm when I arrived at the gym ... i am trying to get there nice and early so I can get a good workout in before the night of coaching begins ... it allows me to a) get a good sweat in, b) release any frustrations from the day and work, and c) I can also work with all the kids on their core and any other training they want to work on ...
I worked out tonight with one of our centres ... big and strong so he worked on his conditioning and then we worked on some core exercises ... we did some back extensions and some sit ups, crunches, hanging leg raises with a twist and so on ... it was a good workout ... was also showing some of the guys a leg workout called pistols ... great workout but very hard to do ... I'll get a couple of them into it :)
Onto practice ... tonight we did a lot of shooting to get the kinks out after a long weekend. We had them break into groups of 3 ... using two basketballs the 3 players would move to an open spot on the floor within 15 ft of the basket (first exercise was 15ft jumpers) they would shoot get their own rebound and hit the open man and then run to an open spot ... this continued until a team reached 20 baskets ... losing players had to do 20 push-ups or sit-ups ... next was one dribble pull-ups .. followed by 3 point jumpers ...
We next moved onto a bit of conditioning with some up and downs and suicides ... I like the up and downs but not so much the suicides but sometimes they have to be done ...
working on our fast break out let passes and right down into our offense ... it is starting to come together and the guys are starting to pick up what they can do once the offense is set ... everyone ran through it three or four times before we moved onto working on the half court sets only ...
The half court motion is starting to come a long ... some of the guys are not to sure what they should be doing and it slows the process down but overall things are looking up ... I showed a couple of new concepts within the motion and had them run through the motion and into one of the sets that I called out for them ... it's coming along but they have to start writing the rules and concepts down so they will remember them ...
We then moved onto close outs ... this was a great drill as we were able to work with each player and correct some of their faults ... they picked up the comments and we were able to move onto the team shell drill ... I like to see that the guys are picking up our defense on the strong side of the ball but the weak side rotation is in need of some help ... we really worked on the rotation and getting everyone to the I spot on the floor ... I think us using one word for spots on the floor will help them learn it quicker ... we shall see
We then moved onto our press break ... which the guys understand and using it to flow into our offense ... nice to see that most of them remembered what we went over 20 minutes before but a couple looked very lost ...
We then had them shoot 10 foul shots and report back to us ... we need to work on foul shots!
We then worked on our half court set 'horns' that then flows so well into the motion offense ... we didn't spend to much time on it as they understood it very well ...
The last thing that we worked on for the night was our in-bound plays ... we went over almost all of them and then added a couple of 'other' options that they should also look for ... a lot of grins came out of one or two of the 'options'
At the end of the practice reminded them when the bus was leaving and called it a night ...
Reflection:
The guys have to work on a couple of things on their own time:
1) Really understanding the rules of the motion offense ... that it is not a set pattern they run but the options they have after they make a pass or receiving a pass
2) When they receive a pass to square up to shoot ... even if they are not going to shoot ... triple threat position!
3) To relax on offense ... let the game come to you and not attack looking for the game ...
4) be SOLID! making those fundamental plays, screens, shot selection, pass selection ... etc ...
We have a great group of kids that can do something very special, something our school hasn't seen in a while ... time will tell :)
Game tomorrow at 8pm!
