We started practice at 5:30pm and they did not come out with the intensity that we had hoped ... it started with one of our returning players ... he is a leader on the team as he is only one or two guys who played for us last year the rest are rookies ... so this player walked into the gym at 5:28pm (already late in my opinion) began giving high fives to his teammates and talking to people ... then at 5:30pm slowly walks to the change room to get ready ... 5:40pm comes out of the change room, what he was doing in there for that long I have no idea, sits on the side bench and begins to tie his shoes ... it is now 5:47pm ... he has missed 17 minutes of the warm-ups ... so I pull him aside and talk to him ...
I discussed that as a leader on the team he must lead by example as these guys are all rookies and look up to the vets of the team ... I used the big brother syndrome ... were the younger brother always copies the big brother ... if his teammates see him come in late with no urgency to change and get on the court they will do the same ... and that is exactly what happened tonight ... a coupleof others came in around the same time and joked around before getting changed ... mind you they did get ready faster then the vet ...
So after the warm up and stretching we line them up on the baseline ... explain our rules and the fact that we can't just come in when we want and at our own pace ... then we make then run ...
I think we will have a track team when the season starts ... but that will come as an advantage as we want to push the tempo more this year ...
ok on to practice ... we started off working on their defense, well more like the defense we want them to use, so we had to bring it to the basics ... last year we found out that went teaching we have to bring it to the basics and build them up together ... so that is the way we are going to do it this year ... they didn't to bad it's definitely a work in progress but they seem to get it ...
we then moved onto the offense ... again broke it down ... only showed then a couple of the pieces of the motion as we want to make sure they understand the basics before we move on to more complicated parts ... I think they are getting it ... we shall see on Tuesday ...
We finished the practice off with more conditioning ... probably would have gone quicker had they listened to the instructions ... but alas they were tired and shut the brain down a bit early resulting in some extra running ... then on to my total body workout in less then 10 minutes ... we did 3 sets of burpees, sit ups and push ups ... not to bad but the way I do them they get a nice workout ...
Tonight's practice overall went well they got into it after the beginning run and our talk ... now lets see what happens Tuesday ...
So tonight after practice we had a team meeting ... not to bad a mandatory meeting for the players to go over the rules, drug testing, and fitting for their uniforms and what not ... oh and of course their varsity fees ... the meeting lasted until about 9pm ... long but they got it all out of the way and all the paperwork complete ... now we can work on the on court stuff ...
Next practice ... Tuesday ...
Coach Hopps
You're building these boys not only into fine athletes but into disciplined and well-mannered men. Your dual hat will serve these guys on and off the court. What brilliance, Coach Hoppz. P.
