Tonight we had a late practice 7:30PM ... I am thinking late practice great everyone will be on time and ready to at 7:30 ... well once again I was wrong ... one guy missed his bus so he was about 15 minutes late, but that is ok in my books because he sent me a text message saying he missed the bus and will be late ... another was late ... not sure why but he talked to one of the other coaches, so that is ok ... the only one that is not ok is the guy who didn't show up! Yup that's right a no show and he didn't even contact us or Colin our admin guy who works at the college ... we shall find out what his deal is Thursday ...
Ok onto the practice ... We started off by finishing the run for some of the players not listening at last practice and at the end of last practice ... Seneca's first track team I'm telling ya ... but every year starts off like that ... takes a bit of time but I know these guys will get it and start acting like the men we know they are ... starts with it on the court and it will translate to stuff off the court like in the class and at work ... character ... Ok so we have now finished the running now it's on to the teaching ...
We started off today with some shooting drills, we had them in groups of three working on 15 foot baseline jumpers, with them rotating and continually moving, then moved to driving middle with opposite guard rotating to the correct drift spot, then driving baseline and the opposite guard drifting to the appropriate spot on the floor again ... the guys seemed to like it plus it gave everyone a lot of shots ... as coaches we had a chance to see who can shoot and who we need to work on a bit more ...
Quick water break and from there we split them into two groups ... one group worked with Coach M on defense and the other group worked with myself and Coach Sharif on the offense ...
I like the progress of the offense ... everyone is starting to get the flow of the offense and the timing of the cuts down ... which is really nice to see with only 5 practices left until our first game! wow how time flies! ... we worked with all 5 positions on the floor and started really working on adding to the offense that we taught earlier in the week ... we were able to implement side ball screen, high cross screen, and the reverse options ... I am liking how it is starting to shape up ...
While we were teaching them and working on the motion system I was able to see which players are picking it up and which players will need a bit of time to understand the movements and the rules of the motion ...
So we ended the practice working hard on our offense and the other group of guys working on the defense ... It was really good as we were able to see everyone that was there and able to see what each player knows and what each player needs to work on ...
At the end of the practice we gathered in the middle of center court and provided them a practice summery ... Overall it was good ... we mentioned that we need to all be on time and if your going to be late or miss a practice we need to know in advance ... we mentioned that when playing defense in drills we will work them hard for 2 minutes on that drill and move on to the next but we need everyone to work hard for those 2 minutes so we can do that ... on offense I was very happy with every ones effort and liked the fact that we were able to move onto additional steps of the motion ... I then gave them homework ... to write out what we have done thus far as we will be introducing more phases of the motion next day ...
Looking forward to Thursday's practice ... liked the attitude of the guys and the willingness to work hard ... keep it up guys!
