Tryouts - The Final Day ...

So Friday night was the last day of tryouts ... with two of the four coaches missing the last day we pretty much had it down to the last couple and wanted them to come Friday and prove it ...

So I get to the gym early like usual and see Curtis who has been sidelined because of a foot injury and we are waiting for the results from the doctor ... we get the results and its negative for a fracture ... so next week he starts rehabbing the foot with our trainer ... should be good as new in a week ...

Ok the tryout ... well lets just say that the two coaches that couldn't make the tryout was smart! These kids didn't come with any passion, no hustle, and the kids that are on that bubble didn't do any better ... we played 5 on 5 full court with the same principles as Thursdays practice ... work the 4 out 1 in and play hard defense like we have shown them ...

So we break up the teams and let them go at it ... five minutes into it we blow it dead and have them go to the baseline ... they walk to the baseline! ... warning number 1 ... we remind them that when we ask them to do something we do not walk, grab water, or sander on over we job and/or sprint depending on where you are and where you have to be ...

We move them to 5 on 5 half court ... same principles again ... again they play a one on one type of game and the two posts just sit down in the lane instead of spacing and working together ... again we blow it dead and have them go to the base line ... this time one of our returning players shoots the ball ... warning number 2 ... we again ask them to put the ball down go back to the baseline or where ever we ask them to go fast! ... again we explain that it is a tryout and we are looking for the final 15 for this roster and that we also want to see who knows and can execute what we have asked ... we make some subs and let them go back at it ... we make them run up and downs for not listening and doing their own thing and explain things yet again!

It's not a hard drill, it's 5 on 5 half court ... for 5 possessions one team is on defense then we switch ... ok so they are playing their game and again they start going one on one and again doing their own thing ... this time I ask them to stop and another person shoots the ball well after I had asked them to go to the baseline ... that was their last strike! I have them run to the foul line do 10 burpees, center 10 burpees, far foul line 10 burpees, and far baseline 10 burpees and then run backwards back to the original baseline ...

We explain that we have asked them to do something and no one is doing it ... we can play ball or we can become a track team ... I can do either ... we again let them play ...

By this time us coaches are sick of it these kids wasted an hour or so of our life that we can't get back so we drum up our list and call them in ... we announce that if we call your name congratulations your on the team and if we don't thank you for coming out but we have gone a different direction ...

We take the 15 guys to center court and lay into them ... as the head coach is gone for a week to handle some stuff us assistance will be running things and that we will not tolerate another practice like this ... our admin guy comes and provides the guys an info sheet of the things they need to bring to the meeting on Monday night ...

We left it at that and said we would see them all Monday ...

All I know is if they come like they did Friday we will have a good track team!
