February 26, 2011

Mohawk 71

#20 Aminu Bello 22 points
#23 Jermaine Decosta 16 points

Seneca 79

#15 Jermaine Lightbody 26 points
#1 Norman Hamilton 19 points

Tonight Seneca took on Mohawk at Newnham Campus following the Men's Volleyball OCAA Championships! This was the first round of the OCAA Mens Basketball playoff with the winner earning a spot in this years OCAA Mens Basketball Championships being hosted by Algoma.

Both teams came out to play tonight trading baskets in a very close game. Seneca led by graduating forward Norman Hamilton (19pts) and 3rd year forward Jermaine Lightbody (game high 26pts) the Sting took a 3 point advantage into the half leading Mohawk 41-38.

The second half again showed that both teams wanted their season to continue. Mohawk began to show that they wanted it a little more mid-way through the second half as they took a 3 point lead as Bello hit an open three from the weak side after a great skip pass. They then continued to play hard as they tied up one of the Sting players forcing a jump ball call and later jumping the lane knocking the ball loose leading to a fast break lay-up.

A time out was called and Coach Dawkins challenged the team to play like it was their last game ... which for some it would be ... The guys came out of the time out and played hard began diving on loose balls and pressuring Mohawk into turnovers and tie ups.

Thanks to some hard work and key free throws the Seneca Sting earned their spot at this years OCAA Championships in Sault St. Marie. Our first game will be against the Humber Hawks ... Should be a great game!

On a side note I just wanted to thank out two seniors who will be graduating after this year. Vadim you have come a long way since you first walked onto the Seneca court. It has been a pleasure watching you grow as a player and I wish you all the best as you continue your basketball career. Norm, what can I say you have been our leader, our stone and simply a beast in the middle. You have been our leader both on and off the court and your presence and your voice will dearly be missed in the locker room. I wish you all the best in the future! You both have worn the Sting uniform with pride and honour and you have left big shoes to fill.

Now on to business! Let's kick some butt at the OCAA Championships Sting starting with Humber!
