The practice before the first game of the regular season! ... You can feel it ... the excitement in the players faces and the fear of their first 'real' college game ... You know they want to play their best and not let the coach down ... you can already see the nerves kicking in on some of them ... ahhhh another season is upon us :)
So I arrive to the gym over an hour early like normal ... I love getting in early so I can do a workout if non of the players need any help with anything ... and today was one of those days ... no players around so off to the gym I went! Nice good core workout ... trying to get back into shape as I have had to take a couple months off to let my shoulder heal from a lacrosse injury ... never the less ... I finished my workout and one of the players saw me and wanted to get a workout in so back to the gym I went ... I did more of the showing the exercise then doing them but did manage to get a couple I hadn't done in ... Glad to see that my players are dedicated to getting in top shape!
Onto the practice ... today's practice wasn't to hard on them we really wanted to come in and do more of a review of everything and then scrimmage a bit so they get the feel of the game setting ... we started off practice with them working on their fast break outlet drill ...not bad but also needed a bit of a jolt to get everyone going ... enter coach ...
We talk about the importance of starting practice or games off on the right foot and not coming out flat ... It starts with the point guards! they have to come out with the energy to get everyone else going ... especially in practice is they come out slow the rest will follow suit ... if they come out hard everyone will have to pick it up to keep up as they are the ones that run the flow ...
we then worked on our secondary break ... the guys remember that so we were able to move onto a drill that focused on our primary break and our secondary break as the only options to score ... They had 15 seconds to get the ball into the hoop ... first option was the primary break and the 2nd option was the secondary and those were the only two ways you could score ... we had many turnovers during this drill ... just because they were rushing themselves and not taking their time and working the play ... next practice I believe we will be counting the turnovers ... have to learn to protect the ball ...
The next area of the practice we worked on our offenses ... I took a group of the guys and worked our original offense for about 10 minutes to make sure that they all remembered their roles and what they had to do ... they picked it up but its amazing how they go back to their old ways ... we spent a week teaching them how to react to the ball and how the ball dictates what we do and yet they still forget when you add something a bit more complicated ... makes me wonder sometimes ...
we then brought the groups together to work on D and O concepts in a live drill ... seemed to work but they did go back to their old ways and did not move the ball around the court they kept it on one side way to much ... they will understand how easy ball is when they reverse it ...
Again we broke them up this time we took the other group ... worked on our offense as well as a zone defense that we like ... and again brought them back together to work on things ... the zone is coming along and will be used here and there during the season ...
We ended the practice with our press break ... it is coming along and looking getter each practice so I am confident that we can use it to our advantage in games ...
Big day on Wednesday as it is our first regular season game on the road to the OCAA championships!
