Don Bosco - Tryouts - Oct. 1, 2009

Good morning everyone! I hope everyone was able to sleep a bit before their first day of tryouts! I know I even went to be some what early because I knew 5am would be here soon enough!

So today was the first day of tryouts for the Don Bosco Eagles ... the high school team I am the head coach for ... we had about 28 show up for the first day and more expected over the next couple of tryouts as there were field trips and things like that on the go ...

Not to bad of a group of kids for the first day ... there are a couple that already show that they are not ready for the senior level of basketball ... but no cuts today ... let everyone get their nerves under check and hopefully show some improvement over the next 1 or 2 (depending on how long they last) ... I did however have 2 kids quit on me today ... needless to say they are gone ... I don't like quitters plus they didn't even come talk to me just packed up and left ... just shows you how dedicated they are to the program ... I wish them well in their studies ...

So today myself and Coach Q wanted to go over a variety of things ... only spend about 5-10 minutes on each drill and move on ... didn't go quite as smooth as I/we hoped but we managed to cover all the topics on our list ... we started off with some warms ups and stretching ... brought the guys in and talked about what we want to do for the year and what we ask of them ... we then had them split into two groups ... one group would start with dribbling ... they would dribble to a cone and perform a drill we had asked and then continue to the next cone and so on ... then join the second groups line ... The second group started out working on their defensive slides and turning pivots to change directions ... our next drill was for conditioning ... we did a drill called 10 - 20 - 30 ... This drill starts out by doing 10 full court sprints in under 60 seconds ... then you have to complete 20 half court sprints in 60 seconds ... and finally have to complete 30 foul line sprints in 60 seconds ... it's a drill that kills anyone who does it ...

Water Break!!

When they returned from their 60 second water break we started working on some shooting and cutting drills ... we had them get into 4 lines at the two main baskets ... the top two lines would pass the ball to the side two lines, make a V-cut for the return pass ... on one side they would finish with a lay-up and the other side would finish with a jump shot ... not a bad drill but even after demonstrating it a couple of times and walking through it with them they still had a tough time with this drill ... after 5 minutes we moved onto L-cuts ... this time we had them in two lines at the top of the circle ... the first guy in each line would run straight down a line and L-cut to the wing to receive a pass from the 2nd person in line for a 15 foot jump shot ... apparently 15 foot jumper means shoot from the 3 point line and further and this includes the forward/center position players ... that is something we work on once the team is picked not when you are trying to make the team ... just a heads up for you guys ... It wasa sloppy showing but it is also the first day and they are jittery ...

We then went back to some conditioning ... this time we completed a drill called 17s ... sideline to sideline touching the line 17 times in 60 seconds ...

Our second last workout for the day was a 3 man weave into a 2 on 1 back ... The guys really worked hard on this drill ... yeah there are some things that need to be focused on but this was a chance for them to show what they can do with the ball and on defense ... not a bad start ...

We finished off the tryout the same way we finish each practice with 1 n 1 free throws ... we select 1 player to come up and take a foul shot ... misses the first its over and they have to run do burpees, push-ups things like that, hits the first but misses the second ... smaller workout of runs, burpees, sit ups, things like that ... if he hits both it's just a sprint up and down ... we then select another person ... during the season we go through everyone ... today we only had time for 3 ...

Overall not a bad start there are some guys that look like they could be a good fit just have to wait and see ... some transfers will also have to get their paperwork done to see if they can play or not ...

Next Tryout ... Friday Oct. 2, 2009 7:00am

Oh and while I remember ... I got into work today after tryouts and opened my email and I have received a nomination from one of my past Bosco players and current player on the Seneca Varsity team for the Campbell's Chunky MVC Award ... He said some very nice things about me and I wanted to thank him ... I am glad that I was able to help him .. he has come a long way ... Thanks Mussie for those kind words ...

Until then ...

Coach Hopps
