Practice - Sept. 24, 2009

4 practice days until our first game and that included this practice! ... the guys came in and were all ON TIME :) love the late practices sometimes as it means everyone will be there! Although we have figured out that we were missing one guy who made the team but hasn't shown up all week ... looks like he cut himself ... makes it easy on us ...

So today we changed up the warm up routine a bit ... I selected one of the captains from last year to read the warm ups and stretches as he was complaining that my warm up made them to tired for practice ... which is funny as my warm ups were only jogging and a dynamic warm up of stretches ... but it is best that they do it as it gives me a chance to actually talk with the other coaches instead of only catching parts of the convo ...

Ok we have stretched out and just completed a 3 man weave up and down and moved onto the 3 man weave one way and 2 on 1 back so now onto some shooting drills ...

Now with the shooting drills I wanted to combine them with functions that they will see in their offense ... so the first drill we had was have them line up in 4 different lines, 2 on the baseline and two up above the 3 point line ... on one side they would be passing the ball to the wing then making a hard cut to receive the pass back and finishing with a lay-up ... on the other side we had the pass to the wing, make a hard cut, receive the pass and do a short jump shot off the backboard ...

Our second drill that we had them work on was a high cross screen with a skip and a seal down low for our big man ... this is a great drill ... well I think so as it helps them develop that high cross screen and and shows what they can do when they reverse the ball as well as shows the second cutter ... This drill fit perfect in our offense and the guys really seemed to pick up on it ...

The third drill that we worked on was our side screen, roll, skip pass ... this drill also fits well in our offense and after a couple of demonstrations and corrections the guys started to pick it up ... we have our big come out of the post set a side screen on our guard, our guard uses the screen and hits the big as he rolls, if the lane is cut off the big looks to hit the opposite guard for a shot. I really like this drill as it gets them thinking and seeing the floor ... A bit more to work on on this drill such as timing and a couple of small things but very happy that they picked it up ...

Once we completed these shooting drills we had them run a set of up and downs ... one to get them into better shape with conditioning and two to loosen them up for the rest of the practice ... like to keep that heart rate up and make them think when they are tired ...

After a quick water break we broke them up into our top ten players for this practice and then filled in the rest as subs for each team ... we went over our defense with them and then made it live and stopped them if we needed to correct something ... the guys are starting to understand what we expect from them on D and what we are looking for when we are playing D ... it is starting to come a long quite nicely ...

we then went with a live scrimmage with some rules ... that they had to follow our defensive principles and use our offense ... we stopped them when we needed to correct things that we saw needed to be corrected ... over all not to bad but the guys seem to be thinking to far a head and rushing themselves on the O ... that can be corrected and it will in time ...

Friday is another day and we will be breaking down the offense again and making things even easier for them ... I think after some time doing the reps with each other they will begin to see the flow and begin to understand the offense a bit more ...

until Friday ...
